INTERNATIONAL LITERACY DAY 2020
The International Literacy Day is celebrated globally on September 8 every year to raise awareness and remind people of the importance of literacy. The theme of International Literacy Day 2020, is “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.”
People with no or low literacy skills, who already face multiple disadvantages in their daily lives, have had limited access to health and preventive information about the coronavirus or to online learning opportunities to continue their education. The COVID-19 crisis has shed light on the unpreparedness of infrastructure, education systems, programs, and people for ensuring the continuity of teaching and learning in such a situation. Many parents are concerned about the disruption of their child’s education, and distance learning assisted by technology has been adopted as a temporary solution to this problem. However, remote learning has also highlighted the impact of the digital divide on the less fortunate here in our own community.
The Literacy Project of Eagle County is here to embrace, support and scale up initiatives that pursue the improvement of literacy skills for adults, children and youth through technology. Children’s education requires, now more than ever, free access to quality educational resources and technology. In honor of the International Literacy Day, we are calling on our supporters, volunteers, partners sponsors and friends of literacy to ensure children and adults keep learning during and after this global crisis. Give now to give the gift of literacy and technology to students and adult learners in need right here in Eagle County.
