Summer is right around the corner. If you, like many parents throughout the valley, are researching summer opportunities for your kids, consider a unique learning opportunity that is a win-win for both children and teens in our community: The Reading Buddies.
Reading Buddies is a partnership between The Literacy Project and the Eagle Valley Library District through which teen volunteers (Big Buddies) are matched with a Little Buddy in grades 1, 2 or 3. Reading Buddy pairs read together, play reading-based games, and participate in group activities to help foster a love of reading. The purpose of Reading Buddies is to grant teens the opportunity to develop leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills. Teen mentors learn to choose appropriate reading materials and are trained on positive reinforcement teaching techniques. Little Buddies are emerging readers, struggling readers, and kids who love to read. Little Buddies receive extra reading practice with a trained, caring mentor in a fun environment.
Children and Teens can participate in Reading Buddies at either the Avon, Eagle, or Gypsum Library this summer. Our sessions meet once each week for 8 weeks, and our summer sessions are as follows. Space is limited, so be sure to sign up early!
